The Mightiest Is Not So Mighty

Being the most expensive comedy ever made isn't really something to be proud of when your movie opens to only modest earnings. Evan Almighty costing from $175 million to $200 and some million took the #1 spot this weekend, but didn't dominate like it needed to in order to recoup its investment. Sorry Stevie, you ain't no Jim Carrey. Looks like Evan isn't going to make the summer's top 9 after all. Perhaps Die Hard 4 will take its spot. 1408 also did well, but it isn't going to make the watch list before being passed up by next weekend's films.

In milestone news, Knocked Up passed the $100 million mark, impressive for a low budget comedy. The movie still has quite a bit of "go" left in it. Shrek 3 did indeed make it to $300 mil, and Pirates 3 looks like it just may make that triple platinum mark as well in a couple more weeks. Spidey looks just about done with maybe 3 or 4 million to go. Less noteworthy, the Fan 4 will be crossing $100 this week, the 9th film this year to do so.

Next week should be a big one as July kicks off to a big start with Pixar's Ratatouille taking on Live Free or Die Hard just a couple days before the epic opening of Transformers, and I haven't even mentioned Harry Potter yet. July is gonna be crazy. Since Die Hard opens this Wednesday, look for the rat to easily take the weekend with $60 million or so.
