Beowulf is Here

It sorta looks like a feature length video game cut scene, but it also sorta looks cool. Beowulf is here, and in IMAX 3D. If you see it, post your thoughts here. This one looks like it might bust the $100 mil mark. Good luck to you Wulfy!

I was at the Field Museum this morning and there was a mention of Beowulf. It said that Tolkien was a big fan and that it served, at least in part, as inspiration for his writings.

so, you are calling Tolkien a hack?

No, he's not. Influence doesn't indicate hackery. If it did, every modern author would fall under the title since every modern author has their own influences that have shaped their writing style and imagination.

It's common knowledge that Tolkien was deeply influenced by the norse and icelandic sagas, especially since they were in his field of study as a philology professor at Oxford. LOTR definitely retains the style and flavor of these influences. (It's also one of the reasons Viggo Mortenson said he was interested in playing in the movies in the first place).

Anyway, "hack" doesn't even enter into it...

shiro, dont worry. i was just joking around. obviously tolkien is the man. though he has been ripped off countless times in modern fantasy.

I want to be "into" this movie, but from the trailers the mo-cap just ain't pulling me in. It DOES feel too video-gamey.

I guess the only way to put it to the test is go see it...which is the easy part. The hard part: convincing the fiance to go with me.
Guess I'll be taking a long "lunch" again like I did for 300.
